CPA Considerations
To become a CPA, earning a bachelor’s degree is sufficient; an advanced degree in accounting is typically not required. However, if you are interested in advancing your career, the two most common graduate degrees accounting students will pursue are a Master of Accounting or a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Master of Accounting
Pursuing either a Master of Accountancy (MAcc), Master of Science in Accountancy (M.S. in Accounting) or Master of Professional Accountancy (MPac) typically benefits individuals who have no prior background working in the accounting profession and wish to become a CPA. However, completing a master’s degree in accounting can also benefit working professionals who are already in the industry and wish to apply for higher-level management positions within the firm.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
As an alternative to a Master of Accounting, some professionals choose to pursue an MBA to build their career toward accounting. This degree typically offers a broader business education, alongside an opportunity to specialize or emphasize some coursework in accounting. Juris Doctor/LLM in Taxation
