Careers in Education
Choosing to support others in their learning process and educational experience is one of the most rewarding and meaningful careers that you can have. This may be a great career path for you if you enjoy teaching others, working with students, or being in an educational environment outside of the classroom.
Some of you may choose to directly work in classrooms, such as Teaching K-12, while others may choose to support student learning in a number of different ways, including working as curriculum specialists, administrators, or student affairs professionals.

Careers in Human Services
Human services is a broad area of work, but at the heart of it, you seek to support human needs and development by utilizing an interdisciplinary knowledge base. This profession focuses on prevention and remediation of problems and issues that people may encounter in their daily lives.
If you are considering this area, ask yourself: who do I want to help and how?
Your answer to this may be your guidepost to the most satisfying career path for you. Many people in this profession provide direct service to constituents, including therapists and social workers. Others take on leadership, coordination, outreach, or administrative roles in the field by serving as case managers, mental health advocates, human services aides, social services managers, and more.
No matter which path you decide to embrace, the work that you choose to do will focus on meeting human needs and improving the overall quality of life for people.
Academic Preparation
UCSB Majors
There is no specific major or minor that you must study in order to pursue a career path in Education + Human Services. Many students who work toward this field have been drawn to social sciences, liberal arts, and humanities majors such as Sociology, Ethnic Studies (e.g., Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicanx Studies), Feminist Studies, History, and English. However, others have entered the profession with backgrounds in science, mathematics, and more.
No matter which major that you choose, it is important to choose a major that you can enjoy and excel in. Many career paths in the field of Education & Human Services require graduate level education or credentialing (but not all), therefore you should start considering the types of academic preparation you will possibly need for any particular career path within the field.
UCSB Minors
Consider adding a minor to better understand the field of Education & Human Services and explore career options. The Gevirtz College of Education offers three undergraduate minors for students interested in the fields of education and applied psychology. You can also consider selecting a minor that is related to specific issues or populations that you are interested in working with. For example, you could minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. If you are interested in advancing your knowledge in working with marginalized communities or in multicultural contexts, you may be interested in pursuing minors such as Poverty, Inequality, and Social Justice, or Feminist Studies.
