General Career Information

University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Has one of the better sites for “What Can I do with a Major In…”

City University of New York
Provides a brief examination of the sorts of skills developed by the study of history and various career options available to history majors.

American Historical Association
Gives some career ideas for history majors, and a link to career ideas for those specifically interested in public history.

University of Texas
Arranges a nice list of directly related, less related, and indirectly related occupations for history majors.

Miami University (Ohio)
Provides a list of competencies and occupations within reach of history graduates:

University of Montana, Missoula
Has a very helpful site which gives introduction to history, related occupations, types of employers, related web links and professional associations.

Internships

Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
Offers a variety of internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in public history.

Department of the Navy
Internships are available in several specialties at The U.S. Navy Museum: Curator, Historian, Education, Public Relations, and Design.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration
The NASA History Division sponsors internships for undergraduate and graduate students year-round.

Chicago Historical Society
This internship is a challenging, educational experience designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in museum practice, archival administration, arts administration, or historical scholarship.

Smithsonian Opportunities
Internships at the Smithsonian, for the most part, are arranged individually. Information and applications may be obtained by contacting the appropriate internship coordinator or by contacting the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, the central referral service for internships.

Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program
Paid internships are available Undergraduate and graduate students can participate in internship projects for 10 weeks during the summer or 15 weeks during a fall/spring semester. All interns are paid a weekly salary with additional benefits.

Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Museum Studies Internship Program provides interns with exposure to the inner workings of a major metropolitan museum, promoting an awareness of museum careers through experiences not available in most academic settings.

U.S. Capitol Historical Society
Each semester hosts one or two interns from the undergraduate and/or graduate level to assist the History and Educational Outreach Departments. This is a wonderful opportunity for any self-motivated student who wishes to improve his or her research skills and gain experience in the practical field of history.

Henry Ford Museum
Historical Resources Internship Program is designed for students enrolled in undergraduate programs in history, American studies, museum studies or related fields, the Historical Resources Internship Program provides participants with an opportunity to gain experience in a major American history museum.

Colorado Historical Society
Pleased to provide an internship program for graduate and undergraduate students at the Colorado History Museum during each fall, spring and summer semester.

Historical Society of Pennsylvania
Seeks individuals who wish to learn more about archival work. Internships are developed on an individual basis and every effort is made to match the intern’s interests and expectations with the tasks assigned.

Filson Historical Society
The Filson fellowships and internships encourage the scholarly use of our nationally significant collections by providing support for travel and lodging. Internships provide practical experience in collections management and research for graduate students.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Historical Society (GLBTHS)
GLBTHS in San Francisco invites applications from undergraduate and graduate students for internships with the Historical Society.

Professional Associations

American Association for State and Local History
Provides leadership service, and support for its members, who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful in American Society.

American Historical Association (AHA)
AHA was founded in 1884 and incorporated by Congress in 1889 to serve the broad field of history. It encompasses every historical period and geographical area and serves professional historians in all areas of employment.

Organization of American Historians
Promotes excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and encourages wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history.
