Coastal Careers Project
Do you love the ocean? Are you interested in a career
that would enable you to work near the coast and contribute
to coastal preservation and understanding? Students
of all majors are welcome to browse through the resources
offered through our Coastal Careers project in the
Career Services Resource Room
(library).
In Fall 2007, Career Services received a generous
grant from the UC Santa Barbara Associated Students
Coastal Fund, enabling us to hire two student career
peers to research general information, internships,
jobs, and educational resources related to eight
new careers. Our peers also cross-referenced the information
with our existing career binders. The new and cross-referenced
Coastal Careers binders include:
- Aquarist
- Aquatic Sports
- Coastal Ecotourism
- Diver
- Engineer, Marine (Coastal Engineer)
- Hydrologist
|
- Ichthyologist
- Marine Scientist/Oceanographer
- Merchant Marine
- Sustainable Aquaculture
- Underwater Archaeologist
|
|
In addition to the binders,
we hosted a “Careers
on the Coast” panel and reception, with five
panelists from different local organizations, who
spoke about their career paths and opportunities
in the field:
- Environmental Analyst, Environmental
Defense Center
- Director, Ty Warner Sea Center
- Trap
Fisherman involved with sustainable fishery research
programs
- Owner and General Manager, Santa
Barbara Sailing Center
- Professor, UCSB Ecology,
Evolution & Marine
Biology department
Stop by Career Services to check out our resources
and pick up handouts from the panel.
