The Economics
Department does not offer academic credit for
internships. However, it is possible for student
interns to incorporate ideas from their field
experience as part of an independent research
proposal under Economics 199. A 199 research
proposal form may be obtained from the departmental
advisor, and then completed and signed by an
appropriate faculty sponsor for 4 units. Students
must also have upper division standing and a
3.0 GPA for the previous three quarters. A non-credit,
Certificate of Completion for 100 hours of internship
experience is also possible through Career Services.

must first register first. The on-line registration
takes only 5 minutes to complete and also provides
an email system for announcing new or upcoming

Less than 30%
of UCSB graduates go right into a MBA or Graduate
School program given the importance of at least
two to three years experience before applying.
However, it is critical to secure faculty recommendation
letters before leaving campus to use later.
Students are also encouraged
to take the GRE or GMAT the summer after
graduation or before
given scores are good for up to five years.

A Master’s degree is
usually the minimum requirement for a job
as an instructor in junior
and community colleges. However, a Ph.D. is
necessary for appointment as an instructor
and extensive publications in academic journals
are required for professorship, tenure and
promotion.
