UCSB Campus Interview Program

Employers large and small come to Career Services to recruit students. Most seek June graduates. The greatest number of employers interview here in the fall. Interviews begin in October for the academic year. Our office has a solid reputation among employers. We do our best to make sure that the interviewers enjoy their experience and are in the mood to hire UCSB graduates.

Please refrain from using the Campus Interview Program for practice! Instead, sign up for a mock interview. Employers spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to send recruiters to UCSB to interview our students. We are ready to help you to practice interviewing without occupying the seats we reserve for students who have authentic interest in the employers using our program. Ask about our books, videos, lists of questions, and our deluxe "mock" interview services. It hurts UCSB when students use real campus interviews for practice.

About GauchoLink
GauchoLink is our on-line scheduling system. It is available day-and-night, seven-days-a-week. You can see which companies are scheduled to visit campus, view their position listings, submit your resume, sign up for interviews, research the companies and print your interview schedule from any computer with Internet access.

Eligibility
Participants in the Campus Interview Program must be currently enrolled for the full-time/permanent employment interviews, graduating no later than August. A few employers interview sophomores and juniors for summer jobs, usually in the accounting or technical fields. For those employers only, juniors and sophomores are eligible to interview.

You are eligible to participate in these interviews if you are:

  • a currently enrolled student
  • graduate student completing requirements for a Master's or Ph.D.

What's the First Step?
Register on GauchoLink. If you are already a registered user, you'll need to enter an on-line resume. This will enable you to sign up for open schedules or submit your resume for pre-select schedules. If you need assistance in preparing a resume:

  • attend a workshop.
  • review our on-line resume writing instructions.
  • Drop by any weekday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for a critique. Once you have registered and entered an on-line resume, you may view the list of companies, to see the dates and positions they will be interviewing in the Campus Interview Program.

Job Listings
Job listings for each company conducting campus interviews will be posted on our Web site. These listings include:

  • Brief company description
  • Description of the job duties
  • Job Requirements
  • Types of materials required by the employer, i.e.: cover letter, resume, transcripts, etc.
  • Deadlines for submission of materials

Listings change by the hour, so be sure to check the system often. Oftentimes, employers request additional materials such as an application, unofficial transcript or cover letter. Additional materials, including an on-line resume, must be submitted by the deadline.

Open and Pre-Select Schedules
A schedule typically consists of 12 interviews of one-half hour each. There are two types of schedules:

  • Pre- Selection
With this option, you upload your resume to be reviewed by the employer. They will then select the resumes that best suit the requirements for the job. The employer sends an email to the students selected for interviewing. Students will then sign up for an interview time slot that is most convenient for them.
  • Open Sign-ups
An open sign-up is open to eligible students and alumni who meet the employer's criteria. The applicant will upload a resume and will be able to sign up for a specific interview time slot.

The Interview
Dress professionally. This means a suit (tie and jacket for men, and a business suit for women. Go directly to the waiting room approximately 10-15 minutes before your interview time. (You do not need to check in, but can go straight to the waiting room.) The interview schedules for that day will be posted on the bulletin board. Make sure your name is on the schedule, and that you are reporting in at the correct time. Note the interviewers' names on their business cards above the schedule. These cards are filed away at the end of the day in the business card file for future reference.

Have a seat and wait to be called. The interviewer will call you in one of two ways. They will either come into the waiting room and call you at the time of the interview or use the light board panel. Instructions regarding the light panel are on the bulletin board in the waiting room (this is not used very often).

No-Show Penalty
Signing up for an interview and failing to show up or cancel 24-hours in advance will suspend your eligibility for campus interviews until a letter of apology or email has been written to the interviewer and a copy of the letter or email brought in for clearance by the Campus Interview Program staff. A second "no show" will disqualify you from participating in the Campus Interview Program.

Where May I Get Assistance?
Have more questions? Want some specific help? Come by during our drop-in hours and meet with a Career Counselor individually or make an appointment by calling (805) 893-4412.

Should I Check My Email?
YES! Check your email often. Our staff will notify you of schedule changes and cancellations. In addition, company representatives may use email to inform you of your selection as a pre-select candidate. Also, a number of employers rely on the GauchoLink system to communicate with candidates. Be sure to check your application status on GauchoLink.

What if I Don't Exactly Meet the Requirements?
If you don't exactly meet an employers requirements, come to Career Services to discuss your situation with a career counselor. Such a situation might be: a company is seeking candidates with a B.A. in a specific major and you have an M.A. or you have a minor in the major being sought or you feel you are qualified for some other reason. We may be able to add your name to the schedule if an interview slot is available.

What's Do I Do Next Once I Get An Interview?
Once you know that you have an interview: research, research, research! Click on the Company field on the job listing and you'll be instantly connected to their Web site. Check to see if employers you are interested in are holding presentations and plan to attend. Some of the presentations are the only way that you can get on the interview schedule and thus attendance is mandatory. Get to know what the company is all about, that way you'll be better prepared to answer interview questions as well as to ask informed questions if given the chance.

Where Can I Get Help Preparing for an Interview?
Yes! Our Career Counselors and student peer advisors love to help students to prepare for interviews. We have a large selection of books, videos, and tips. There are no excuses for you not interviewing like a pro.

What If I Need to Cancel/Miss an Interview?
If you need to cancel an interview, you must do so at least one working day ahead of the engagement. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of your interviewing privileges through the program for one quarter. If you miss a scheduled interview that was not canceled, your eligibility to participate in further campus interviews will be revoked AND you must meet with a Career Services staff member for additional instructions.

How Can I Get Feedback About My Interview Performance?
Employers are asked to give feedback on your interview. Some companies' policies prohibit them from doing so, but we often receive written feedback. Request to receive your evaluation from the Campus Interview desk. Check in with the Campus Interview Program staff two working days after your interview for your feedback.
