MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE M.A.T.

1. What is the M.A.T.?
Its formal name is the Miller Analogies Test. The subject content of the test is extremely broad, basically everything you’ve ever learned from birth, and its format consist of many different kinds of analogies. Like the Graduate Record Exam (G.R.E.), the M.A.T. measures logical thinking ability.

2. How do I prepare for the test?
Study guides! Several major companies, e.g., Barron’s, Harcourt-Brace, Arco, etc., publish preparation materials for the M.A.T. Borders, Barnes & Noble, the campus bookstore, and most other retailers of paperback books, stock a good variety of these guides. A guide with lots of sample tests with 120 analogies and information about the different types of analogies is most useful. Comparing guides may also be helpful.

3. What do I need to do before I can sign up?
To fully understand the M.A.T. and its many types of analogies, to determine how much time you will need to prepare for the test, and to practice pacing your responses within the allocated 60 minute test time, plan to work through all the sample tests with 120 analogies. These longer tests are representative of the actual test you will be taking. At that point, you should have a much better idea as to how much additional time you will need to prepare for the test.

4. When is the test offered?
The M.A.T. is offered several times per quarter. The 2-hour time block (2:00 – 4:00pm) is scheduled so that a substantial amount of paperwork can be completed, usually 30 minutes worth, prior to the 60-minute test (generally, you will be out the door around 3:30pm). Examinees should arrive at Career Services 5-10 minutes before the scheduled test time. Have a seat in the Career Services lobby area and the Test Administrator will greet you promptly at 2pm.

5. How do I register to take the M.A.T.?
When you have completed your preliminary preparation (see #3 above), contact Career Services by calling (805) 893-6004 for test dates and times. We will give you a list of items to bring with you on the day of the test when you call.

6. How long does it take for the score report to be sent to your graduate program(s)?
Your official score report will be sent by the Psychological Corporation located in Texas directly to your graduate program(s) approximately 15 working days after you take the test.

For more information about the M.A.T. Test please feel free to contact Career Services at (805) 893-6004. Also visit the Miller Analogies website: www.milleranalogies.com.
